Truckers will pay more to use the Kansas Turnpike starting in September

Owner-operators and small fleet managers who run through Kansas need to budget for higher tolls starting next month. The Kansas Turnpike Authority approved a three-year annual toll adjustment of four percent for commercial vehicles with five or more axles, effective September 1, 2026. This is the first rate hike since 2022. For trucking companies using the Kansas system, that four percent hit will apply every year through 2028, compounding your fuel and maintenance costs on a critical corridor.

The toll increase is tied to a capital investment push. The Kansas Turnpike Authority is announcing a $500 million dollar investment to improve and modernize infrastructure across the turnpike's 236-mile system. That money will go toward resurfacing, bridge work, widening projects on I-70 between Wichita and Kansas City, and technology upgrades to tolling systems. These are improvements that could make the road safer and smoother to drive, but you're paying the freight through tolls. The turnpike receives no state or federal tax funding, so all toll revenue goes directly back into the turnpike.

If you're shipping freight across Kansas or regularly deadheading through the state, this matters. The KTA said the increase is the first since 2022, and even after the adjustment, the toll is still among the lowest in the country.
